There are four of them online now here all viewing the Community Index. So expect another barrage soon I would imagine. Like Truth Bestower said, we love this forum and the people, don't want to see it treated like this, I'm passionate too because I despise and loathe spammers.

Managed to reset the validation process to admin only.

Admin can now process genuine applications, identified spam will be deleted at source.

Means no more forum interference and better still, no more of those bloody stupid user names.  :screwy

Nice one. We rarely get new genuine members anyway, but how will we know when we do?

Whoever is doing the admin will see the new registrations and if they're for example from yandex.com or example usernames AndreyNar, capedhig and the like which will be dead giveaways, they can just be deleted.

An application from ILoveLeeroy@yahoo.co.uk however would probably be worth activating.  :lol

There's still a fair bit of mopping up to be done but after that I will be pleased to return to being some noob again lol

lol in the past hour, eight spam attempts at registering, one of them travelagency@gmail.com is a good example of a spam address, it's just great that while they'll continue applying, now they can't just come on our board and eventually they'll just stop anyway. I see Bazza has gone David Dickinson now too, is there an orange epidemic going on?

One of them who was a repeat offender, I decided to send them a message and it went a little something like this:

This is just to let you know that in future you and all your spammer friends can no longer gain access to our forum as a member.

Your logged IP addresses will also be banned.

There is no purpose you trying any longer to join our forum with your silly usernames so our advice is to stop now, FUCK OFF and annoy somebody else.

There were multiple entries of same IP, example 91.200.12.94

staticmap.png

As I said previously, when I had a forum, I experienced the exact same breed of spammers. They are certainly prevalent on the internet...

https://www.stopforu...ck/91.200.12.94

Here's a typical complaint:

In my forum every day I have Russian Spam, how can I ban this type of spam in the forum?

So every forum has the tools and plug-ins to combat spam warfare. Captcha is useful as is human verification but not all email addresses actually exist as I found out during this clean-up operation; it should be the case that an email address is verified as genuine before registration processing begins.

Where Does Forum Spam Come From?

Virtually all forum spam (and blog comment spam) originates in:

  • China
  • Vietnam
  • Ukraine
  • Russia
  • India
  • Pakistan

More than a third of all forum spam comes from China!

Unless your site targets people from the part of the world, there’s no need to cater to them. You can safely block them from participating on your site. They can still see and read the site — they just cannot comment or post. (And in the atypical case that you get that one person that is an asset to your site — but simply happens to live in an area of the world surrounded by spammers — you can always manually create an account.)

Think about it: you can reduce at least 33% of your spam by blocking China alone. Blocking Russia cuts another 9%. Ukraine is 9% again. So three countries, which you probably care nothing about, reduces spam by at least 50%.

This is ridiculous and incorrect, you don't block entire countries to stop spam :lol2

Look for IP patterns. I added a few to the banned list last week.

It's an interesting exercise in truth. Yes I have found patterns. But more than that, I wanted to find out whether these spambots are set to our board and so just queue up. So by disabling new registrations for a while and then enabling it, wasn't long before the applications began again.

It would be nice to think that if they were actually real people at a keyboard trying in vain to become a member, they'd get the message and lose interest, attempts to join us would cease. Doesn't look like that's the case, sadly.
