Spurs want fresh Gary Cahill transfer talks in January to trump Arsenal bid
Tottenham have already approached Bolton over fresh talks in January over the potential transfer of Gary Cahill after both parties struggled to agree terms for the England international on transfer deadline day.

Posted Image

Metro Sport understands Cahill's representatives are open to the idea of sitting down to thrash out the 25-year-old's future when the transfer window reopens.

And Spurs are keen to steal a march on their north London rivals Arsenal, who are also admirers of the defender, by setting up a summit meeting as soon as possible with a view to a possible move in January.

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp made Cahill his top target last week after being promised the funds from the £18million sale of Peter Crouch and Wilson Palacios to Stoke City, following a frustrating summer without any significant spending.

However, as Metro Sport revealed on Wednesday morning, the two clubs were too far apart in their estimations of Cahill, with Tottenham trying to use out-of-favour defenders Sebastien Bassong and Alan Hutton as makeweights - only for Wanderers manager Owen Coyle to reject both.

Redknapp was then hoping the player himself would help push through a deal by telling Coyle he wanted to leave, but the 25-year-old refused to do so, as he holds out for a preferred transfer to Arsenal or Liverpool.

Bolton know they risk losing Cahill on a free transfer in the summer, after turning down Arsenal's £11m bid last week, so are prepared to meet Spurs again in January to try and finally agree terms.

In the meantime, chairman Phil Gartside is expected to offer the former Aston Villa defender a significant pay rise on a new long-term contract, as Bolton maintain their hopes of seeing off all interested parties to keep him.

Intelligent move from Gartside regards Cahill, lose him for nothing when they could have banked 12m. Foolishly they believed that as Nasri went for 23 or 24m with only a years contract left that Cahill was worth a fortune as well. Lets face facts, if City hadnt the money they have Nasri would have gone for far less money to somewhere like United etc. Probably 10m less in fact.

It was a similar story with Young who still went for lots despite being down to a year (I think Downing was too wasn't he?), it was a strange window in that regard but I think it was only because clubs either like City had money to burn or like United and Liverpool had no choice as they needed those players desperately.

Like you say, I think Bolton have messed up massively on this one by trying to get the extra couple of million.

I wish Spurs had of got Lass Diara still, what happened with that one? did they pull out or did Madrid decide not to sell?

Wages were the issue mate, he wouldnt take a drop to our wage structure. I heard he was going to Roma but I dont know if that happened??

He's a good player but the business we did was great with the exception of not getting Cahill or another CB in. Parker for 5m was superb as even if we only get a couple of years from him its money well spent.

Spurs 'worried Luka Modric will join Man United or Chelsea in January'

Spurs fear they will not be able to hold onto Luka Modric for much longer, despite warding off interest from rival clubs during the summer, with Manchester United and Chelsea set to return with new transfer bids in January.

Posted Image

Reports suggest that officials at the north London club believe the Blues, who bid £40million for Modric on deadline day, and fellow admirers United will return to battle it out for the Croatian playmaker's signature.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy knocked back several bids for Modric from Chelsea, but given the player's well-publicised comments calling for a move to Stamford Bridge, Andre Villas-Boas is not expected to give up his pursuit of the 25-year-old.

Sir Alex Ferguson is also keen on the player and, having missed out on Wesley Sneijder in the summer, could attempt to outbid their Premier League rivals when clubs are allowed to trade again after the turn of the year.

Modric was not Sir Alex Ferguson's top target for a new midfielder in August, but now Samir Nasri - who was the subject of a late bid from Old Trafford - has joined Manchester City, it could persuade the Scot to reconsider his options.

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp told the Evening Standard his side are now 'strong in the middle of the park' due to the arrival of Scott Parker from West Ham United and the emergence of youngster Jake Livermore.

Parker completed his move to White Hart Lane earlier this week in a deal thought to be worth £6million.

And now that the ranks are well stocked it could persuade Redknapp to cash in on his wantaway star - especially if he shows any signs of petulance or despondency in the coming months.

Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Roma Expected to Tussle for Lucas

English Premier League duo Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur have joined Roma in tracking Sao Paulo’s exciting attacking midfielder Lucas.

The 19-year-old has shone at the Tricolor Paulista and also made a splash with Brazil’s Under-20 side before breaking through into the senior team under Mano Menezes earlier this year – Lucas made his Selecao debut against Scotland in a friendly in March.

Consistently progressing, it comes as little surprise that some of Europe’s biggest clubs are tracking the schemer closely.

According to Italian daily Corriere dello Sport, a three-way transfer battle between Liverpool, Tottenham and Roma is expected to erupt sooner rather than later.

Sao Paulo will be looking to realise a substantial fee for the 19-year-old when he leaves the Estadio do Morumbi.

Lucas is under contract with Sao Paulo until 2015 and, while having an release clause of some €80M, would likely be sold for closer to the €25M mark.

The midfielder has made 17 appearances in the current Brasileiro, finding the back of the net seven times.
