North east rivals Sunderland and Newcastle are to go head-to-head in a bid to sign Sochaux striker Modibo Maiga.

Newcastle are to make another bid for Sochaux striker Modibo Maiga in January. The Mali international stalled over a move to the club in the summer.

Interesting signing. He's scored an insane number of goals for a struggling Bundesliga side, and shouldn't have much trouble linking up with Demba Ba considering they've already played together at international level.

I'm relieved we have some extra cover now - as for his prospects, obviously it remains to be seen! Depending on his match fitness, I would imagine he'll come in front of Shola and pair up with either Besty or Ba. I just wonder now how we will hang on to the likes of some our other strikers. Still hoping for further incoming transfers......

Shola will always be there to cover and I fully expect Cisse and Ba to play up front until Ba decides to move on. This could well help us keep Ba for next season.
We still need a defender. I don't think we need anyone else for this season. Ben Arfa has this season to show he can fit in somewhere in the starting elven and if he doesn't make that right winger position his own we should sign someone there.
